MAJLIS XXXXX KEBANGSAAN
Mulai 1 Januari 2009, orang beragama Islam di Malaysia dilarang menggunakan Bahasa Melayu. Ini adalah kerana banyak perkataan di dalam bahasa Melayu berasal dari bahasa Sanskrit. Hasil kajian Majlis Xxxxx Kebangsaan mendapati 37% dari perkataan-perkataan di dalam bahasa Melayu berasal dari Sanskrit. Seperti yang tuan-tuan dan puan-puan sedia maklum, Sanskrit merupakan bahasa asal agama Hindu. Ia juga di kenali di masa yang lampau sebagai "the language of the gods".
Oleh yang demikian, Majlis Xxxxx Kebangsaan berpendapat jika bahasa Melayu digunakan di dalam percakapan harian, kemungkinan besar aqidah orang Islam akan terjejas dan menyebabkan mereka menyeleweng dari ajaran Islam yang sebenar.
Oleh yang demikian, Majlis Xxxxx Kebangsaan dengan ini, secara rasminya, mengharamkan orang Islam di Malaysia dari menggunakan bahasa Melayu mulai 1 Januari 2009. Dengan terlaksananya xxxxx ini, maka :
- Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka akan dibubarkan serta-merta
- Stesen-stesen TV and radio tidak lagi akan menyiarkan berita dalam bahasa Melayu
- Permit surat khabar berbahasa Melayu akan ditarik balik oleh Kementerian Dalam Negeri
- Orang islam di Malaysia digalakkan mempelajari bahasa-bahasa lain seperti bahasa Arab, bahasa Inggeris, bahasa Mandarin dan bahasa Tamil.

"Amalan konsep bersenam biasa ialah mengeluarkan peluh tetapi tidak berlaku dalam yoga. Saya sendiri pernah mengamalkan yoga lebih 30 tahun lalu semasa di Amerika Syarikat (AS) dan mampu melakukan senaman teratai, tetapi mula meninggalkannya apabila mendapati yoga bercanggah dengan amalan Islam."

This is just my humble opinion regarding this yoga issue;
Pada pandangan saya, lebih baik sekiranya Ninie diam sahaja dan tidak respon terhadap apa yang dikeluarkan oleh Majlis Fatwa. Bimbang sekiranya boleh merosakkan iman. Contohnyalah, kita semua tahu orang Islam wajib menutup aurat. Tapi ramai yang tak buat. So dapat dosa. Tapi, kalau mereka tak tutup aurat dan kemudiannya mempertikaikan tuntutan agama untuk menutup aurat, mereka ini bukan sahaja dapat dosa kerana tak mengikut syariat Islam tapi juga boleh jatuh murtad kerana sudahlah tak ikut, kemudiannya nak mempertikaikan pula suruhan Allah.
Dalam kes yoga, saya tidak mengkaji, jadi saya kira sebagai seorang yang belum cukup ilmu agama, kita terima sahajalah keputusan majlis fatwa tersebut. Mungkin hari ini Ninie bimbang kalau2 punca rezeki Ninie akan tertutup akibat adanya fatwa ini. Tapi, percayalah. Rezeki itu datangnya daripada Allah. Tuhan tentu akan membuka jalan rezeki yang lebih diberkati untuk Ninie peroleh. Tak ada gunanya hidup mewah di atas dunia kalau di akhirat nanti kita hidup dalam siksaan kerana memperolokkan larangan Allah. Saya yakin, majlis fatwa membuat keputusan tersebut dengan rasional yang kukuh. Kalau golongan agama tidak kita hormati, siapa lagi yang kita nak hormat?
Saya sekadar memberi pandangan. Maaf kalau ada terkasar bahasa atau tersilap bicara. Salam.

I know THE YOGA I DO too hence, I feel that if I can't be respected for that, don't lah insult satu Malaysia dan semua orang lain punya intelligence please.
I understand a fatwa is ruled out after extensive research and but one can't deny the fact that it is man-made and a glitch along the way is not impossible. In history of Malaysia, a fatwa has been revoked before. Read it here.
Tuduh orang jatuh murtad sesenang hati is a very strong accusation. I appreciate your concern but you are not the God I pray to and not the One I seek forgiveness from.

Mufti Perlis saya hormat. Tiap minggu beliau tulis dalam berita harian. Cara beliau mengemukakan isu dan pendapat amat sesuailah dengan gelaran sebagai mufti negeri.
From my humble understanding, Ninie is not making fun of the fatwa but she's making a good mockery out of the people who announced the fatwa before the hands of the Head of Islam of every state (Sultans and Kings).
These PEOPLE like other humans, are flawed and are not God. Generalizing yoga from what they read and from ONCE IN A LIFETIME Yoga class one of them joined THIRTY YEARS AGO (thanks for sharing the link, Ninie. Good fun!)

Too bad if you don't feel ashamed being labeled citizens of a stupid country but I DO as I am Muslim and I am a Malaysian too. I may not have the knowledge and capacity of Yoga like Ninie, so I support her to fight for Malaysia every way I can.
And it's your blog Ninie, it's your space, your right. You are well-read, highly-visited and you can feel good if you want, for the battle is half won perhaps of this space.

Aku mungkin satu antara beratus ex-schoolmate ninie yg bukan kak filzah mahupun junior dia yg aku pun tak paham, kenapa seronok sungguh mengata dan mengaibkan ninie kat sini. menegur, menegur lah jugak tapi aku percaya, tuhan pandang kita dari isi hati dan bukan dari tudung manik warna-warni semata-mata.

Mungkin sebab selalu melawan masa kat STF dan selalu kena marah cikgu (macam aku jugak, hu huu), ninie terang-terangan berani melawan walau dicaci, dikeji.
Macam cikgu-cikgu kita, ahli bijak pandai agama juge tak semestinya betul setiap masa.

baru korang paham apa maksud "illogical" dari segala segi bentuk dan rupa.
i like it that ninie chooses to fight, rather than stay silent and pasrah je. granted, some of her ways to express her views can be a tad harsh (middle finger darling? don't stoop to that level next time) but then again her critics are much harsher than she is.

i had to laugh when i read this. it's one thing to make judgment based on modern days condition, but it's quite another thing to make judgment based on what happened more than 30 years ago.
imagine this: let's just assume that the good professor practised yoga back in the 70's. now imagine what's the 70's in the US was like. it was the years of flower power, of liberation, of experimenting with drugs. yoga back then was something exotic. the hindu influence was seen as something essentials, befitting the spirits of the 70's.
but then what happened in the 90's? yoga got commercialised into power yoga. beryl bender birch, in order to make yoga more accessible to americans as a work-out routine, put the emphasis on strength and flexibility. less lotus pose and more of warrior and balancing poses.
and that's what we got in yoga classes today. no chanting, no meditation, just poses after poses, then relaxation. i've never not sweat in the yoga classes that i've been to (and if i sweat so little i would have said that the class was too easy)
to the fatwa council, get in touch with what's currently going on. offer alternatives. and most importantly, see it for yourself. don't rely on testimonials of someone who did yoga 30-odd years ago.

i sgt tak setuju yoga diharamkan.. tp ninie tak perlu la nk mengamok2.. skang ni pon u buat byk mende haram cthnya tak tutup aurat, tinggal serumah ngn non-muhrim, tp u selamba je, rilek je..
kalu u mengamok ni sbb takot pintu rezki u tertutup, rezki tu dtg dari Allah.. kalu Dia nk tarik, bila2 masa dia boleh tarik..lets saya yoga tak haram pon, tp Allah nk bg petunjuk pd ninie sbb lifestyle ninie yg byk buat mende bercanggah dengan agama, Allah boleh je tunjuk.. cthnye buat kite sakit ke ape, bile sakit, dh takleh keje, dah tak de pendapatan, same jugak..

I'm a non-Muslim yoga student (new in yoga too) so not at any position for giving any comment. But I wish everyone does listen to the Muslim yogis how they feel and response to this issue.

I highly respect you and I look at you as someone I should idolized as you made your dream comes true.
This is just my humble opinion. And mind my bad english too.
I think Yoga has been misinterpreted and misunderstood by a lot of people, even though by the people who is practising it.
The goal or destination of Yoga is Yoga itself, union itself, of the little self and the True Self, a process of awakening to the preexisting union that is called Yoga.
This is achievable through the latent state of mind, which is more or less equal to the state obtained through the modern hypnotization process, as the result from brain reaction to relaxation process.
This state of mind, is believed to be the state of being unity with god, which is totally opposing the teaching of Islam, clearly.
My point is, you can't call yourself a yoga instructor as you're not leading your student towards this state right?
The only thing I believe you're teaching in your class is Asana, Yoga, I'm very sure about this.
Yoga, is not a physical system with spiritual component, but it's actually a Spiritual system with physical system in it, as Yoga, is traditionally defined.
Asana, as what you have been teaching, is just a component of Yoga.
People has been seeing the commercial potential of Asana but they're still maintaining the Yoga name, even though by definition or by objective of Yoga is not going to be achieved.
But you have to remember, yoga has its purpose and objective, and the objective is clearly opposing the teaching of Islam, which is the unity with god.
This misconception of Yoga has been misleading the nation towards this banning of Yoga for muslim, but I strongly support it, as what Yoga is defined and objectived, it's totally wrong for muslim.
I would suggest, instead of using the word Yoga, use the word Asana.
So you may proceed with your asana studio. Yoga Studio doesn't make sense at all as people do not actually need a studio to unite with god, do they?
And calling yourself a Yoga instructor is a mislead, as you do not teach people to reach that state of Yoga, instead you're just teaching them postures, and it's for the purpose of health.
So it's not the time to be sad. Change and continue your business as usual.
I may sound idiotic, but to survive, we have to adapt to our surroundings as the surrounding is a constant parameter that is hardly changing.
There's nothing wrong with Asana Studio. It sounds nice too.

I didn't accuse u as "murtad". Read again my previous comment. I was just giving a scenario.
If im not mistaken, yoga yang diharamkan tu adalah yoga yang ada pengamalan tiga perkara yang dilarang which I believe u had read it yourself. Kalau Ninie rasa yoga yang Ninie amalkan adalah semata-mata yoga yang melibatkan gerak fizikal dan tidak mengandungi 3 perkara yang dinyatakan, then mungkin tak haram. Entahlah. Wallahualam. Cuma apa yang pasti, mendedahkan aurat pada yang bukan muhrim memang haram, tapi takdelah dijadikan fatwa kerana itu perkara jelas yang dah dinyatakan dalam Al-Quran. Mendedahkan aurat tu haram, tapi ramai sahaja yang dedah. Cuma untuk lawan balik nak kata dedah aurat tu tak haram, saya percaya takde sorang Islam pun yang akan berani sebab saya percaya semua orang Islam masih ada iman. I am a Muslim and have been practising yoga in the past 2 years. Not once in the past 2 years that my yoga practise comprised any elements of chanting or worshipping.
When the fatwa came about after almost a month of rumours, I was quite relieved when I read in Utusan Malaysia which made it quite clear that only yoga that involves all the three elements of physical movements, chanting and worshipping are considered haram. However, reading The Star and NST, their reports are more on the emphasize of 'yoga is haram'. Many people who did not read carefully on the fatwa now have the impression that yoga is haram, regardless if the person is only doing the physical movements without the chanting and worshipping. It seems that The Star and NST are trying to sensationalize the issue, resulting on the fatwa being misunderstood. It is surprising that Utusan Malaysia, a Malay newpapers, has more accurate and balance reports. I wonder if the reporters from Utusan understood better of what was said during the annoucement by Jakim which was conducted in Malays. Lost in translation maybe?
To me as a Muslim yoga practisioner, the fatwa is a non issue. We don't chant and we don't worship while doing yoga. We do yoga for the exercise.
Jakim should clear the issue by coming out with a firm and clear statement that yoga without the chanting and worshipping is okay. People are confused now.

saya juga sgt tak berpuas hati dgn fatwa yg mengatakan YOGA ITU HARAM.
saya masih melakukan aktiviti yoga untuk penjagaan kesihatan saye. asalkan saye tahu tiada mantra atau bacaan seperti yg didakwa pihak yg berkenaan, saye akan terus dgn aktiviti yoga.
sgt sarkastik 'forwarded fatwa' ni, tapi, saye rase ini supaya pihak berkenaan membuka mata supaya selidik dahulu sebelum meletakkan sesuatu hukum.
bagi saye YOGA adalah satu latihal fizikal(pernafasan)sahaja . Tidak lebih dari itu.

I encourage to do what you are doing and you love most right now. That is yoga exercise. From my understanding if your "niat" is to do yoga for the purpose of exercise should be fine. Which I believe that is what you are doing.
I believe a lot of muslims are just so frustrated with the current situations is because they do not understand fully on what is the "kehendak" of the fatwa and that leads to misinterpretations and people would simply give up on religion. Have you ever heard of "taklik buta"? If you don't look it up in the internet.

Sejak bila lah pulak aku mengaku berzina dan minum arak, unless you think that Firefly drink is alcoholic, in which case, where do I begin.

I'm muslim and I'm going to register for the yoga classes in my uni tomorrow. Who cares. I have posture problems and I'm pretty sure yoga helps.

I'd say, berani kerana benar.
Just because they are Majlis Fatwa doesn't mean they are always right. They are all human at the end of the day, they are not God, nor they are religion.
Respect has boundaries. Respect to the point of admitting without thinking is just plain stupid. There is a reason why God give human brains and the capacity to think. If we are just to blindly accept what the authority figures decreed (which by the way are appointed by us and not God), might as well we be animals, altho I think even animals can think.
Maybe better be a vege then.
By the way, hanya murtad bila:
1. Doesn't believe the One God (and please don't debate about why I put One God instead of Allah, read up please).
2. Doesn't believe that Nabi Muhammad is the last Prophet.
You CAN question why God said this and that (wear hijab, no alcohol, no pork etc) and yet if at the end of the day you still believes these two, you are not murtad.
So please LAH stop all these nonsense of judging and condeming other people. Unless you are the One God, you have no rights whatsoever to judge.
You can advice, you can have an opinion but to judge? No.

i somehow stumbled onto your blog few days ago. I enjoyed your entrries so much that i have been reading up your past entries - all the way to your first one!
As a fellow Malaysian and also a yoga practicioner i'm deeply disappointed and saddened by your not-so-pleasant(i know that's an understatement) experiences lately.
In order to move forward as a nation we have to be more open and accepting.
I truly believe this can be achieve while still staying true to our respective religions.
Whether to voice out or to stay in silent is your own decision to make. Most importantly is 'do what you believe in and believe in what you do'.

A Muslims fights for what she believes is right is considered Murtad. If you cant beat her in an argument, then resort to religion and hope it works.. If religion also doesnt work then she is murtad..
